Affordable Housing Programs

I know that “affordable housing” seems like an oxymoron, like “jumbo shrimp”, but believe it or not, there are many organizations that are trying to bring home ownership to more people through grants and low interest loans or sometimes just an opportunity to borrow money where traditional banks and lenders cannot. On this page I try to make some of that information available. As new resources become available, I will add them. If you are aware of a program not listed here or if you are a program provider, please send me an email with the information and I, and the community, will be grateful for your contribution.

The Clearinghouse for Affordable Housing and Community Finance Resources is provided by the state of California. This site may be a little daunting, but can provide some in depth information.

Affordable Housing Partnership Program (AHPP) has a list of approved programs that are provided by local agencies. This report has program names, basic details, and contact information. A good place to start if you are considering a specific community or to find a community that may offer you a program. There are also some national and state-wide programs listed.

NeighborWorks Home Ownership Center is a great asset to first time or credit challenged buyers in the Greater Sacramento area. They administer some good programs to assist buyers, such as down payment assistance, etc. They also provide training in the area of home ownership and the process of buying and maintaining a home.

The Home Loan Counseling Center of Sacramento is another, non-profit organization that assists first time and credit challenged buyers through education and one-on-one counseling. Their goal is to increase home ownership for more and more people who may not have thought it possible.

The California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) provides many programs for first time buyers including below market interest rates, interest only programs and other products.

Sacramento Housing & Redevelopment Agency (SHRS)  has some first time homebuyer programs as well as references to programs offered by other organizations. SHRA has programs for renters and for homebuyers, so you’ll need to navigate to find the programs. Or, you can go directly to this page to see their list of homebuyer programs.

And, certainly, you can always send me an email with your questions and I will endeavor to get the answer or help you in any way I can. Real estate, after all, is about the people.
